The California State University reimbursed a high-ranking official in the chancellor's office $152,441 for expenses he should not have billed to the university, a report released today by the state auditor shows.

Senate Passes Women’s Health Amendment

Breaking a three-day stalemate, the Senate approved an amendment to its health care legislation that would require insurance companies to offer free mammograms and other preventive services to women.
The vote was 61 to 39, with three Republicans joining 56 Democrats and the two independents in favor.

The Republican senators voting in favor were the two women from Maine, Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins, and Senator David Vitter of Louisiana. Among Democrats, Senators Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Ben Nelson of Nebraska opposed the proposal.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- With rising unemployment stymying the president's economic revival plans, the Obama administration is huddling with business leaders, academics and other experts Thursday to find a way to jumpstart hiring.

Some 130 people will gather for the afternoon jobs summit at the White House on the eve of the government's November unemployment report. The nation is expected to have lost another 114,000 jobs, with unemployment remaining at 10.2%, the highest in 26 years, according to an economists' survey.

The closest any California public employee union has come to a strike went down last month. It's not apparent that much came of it.

Service Employees International Union Local 1000 asked the 95,000 employees it represents to stay home on Oct. 12, even though the Legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier this year erased Columbus Day and Lincoln's Birthday from the state's paid holiday list.

School: Students Suffer Light-Headedness, Dizziness

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --Three elementary school students were taken to a hospital Wednesday after receiving H1N1 shots, WLKY-TV in Louisville reported.

Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness has been working with Jefferson County Public Schools to give the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to children at school.

The school's principal said the three Shelby students were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure after they experienced dizziness and light-headedness after receiving the shot.

Federal government changes its policies on medical marijuana

When a student was caught smoking marijuana in the Tahoe National Forest, he might once have faced charges despite having a medical marijuana card. Instead, in this particular case, prosecutors dropped the charges because of recent changes in drug policy, said Roseville-based defense attorney Toni Carbone.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Oct. 20 the federal government would stop prosecuting medical marijuana users in states that had passed medical marijuana laws, such as California and 12 other states, including Nevada and Oregon.

Students Bring "Hit of Reality" to Stockton

STOCKTON, CA -- Students at the University of the Pacific are living like the homeless to bring awareness and funds to the cause. Approximately 45 members of Pi Kappa Alpha are holding their 13th annual fundraiser from December 2 - 4, called "Hit of Reality".

"It is essential that we submerge ourselves in these conditions in order to better understand the dire need for fundraising," said Frank Parish, Community Service Chairman for Pi Kappa Alpha.

During the fundraiser, the students are living in cardboard boxes gathered from local businesses and relying only on the generosity of other students. Parish says they cannot purchase anything on their own. They are, however, allowed to attend class and study in the university's library.

Agents Put On Leave After State Dinner Breach

The head of the United States Secret Service told lawmakers today that the agents responsible for letting Michaele and Tareq Salahi into the White House state dinner last month have been placed on leave.

“The individuals have been identified and have been put on administrative leave,” Mark Sullivan, the agency’s director, said during a hearing called by the House Homeland Security Committee to investigate the White House security breach. The agents could face dismissal. Mr. Sullivan ruled nothing out, saying “appropriate action” would be taken once the agency’s investigation was completed.

Sac State Sorority Kicks Off Annual Salvation Army Toy Drive in Style

SACRAMENTO, CA - A local sorority girl kicked off the holiday season by rounding up thousands of toys from a college basketball tournament.

Lisa Allen from the Sigma Kappa sorority from Sacramento State led the effort as the group held its annual philanthropy day in conjunction with a campus basketball tournament, raising over 2,500 donated toys.

Bringing HIV/AIDS awareness to campus

WASHINGTON -- Think your kid is not "sexting"? Think again.

Sexting -- sharing sexually explicit photos, videos and chat by cell phone or online -- is fairly commonplace among young people, despite sometimes grim consequences for those who do it. More than a quarter of young people have been involved in sexting in some form, an Associated Press-MTV poll found.

That includes Sammy, a 16-year-old from the San Francisco Bay Area who asked that his last name not be used.
