Stocks Plunge on Poor Economic Data, Holiday Jitters

U.S. stocks took a deep dive in early trading today as investors remained nervous about the holiday shopping season. 

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 3.8 percent or 334 points, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index was fell 4.5 percent or 40 points. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was down 4.3 percent or 67 points.
