The Tuesday Wakeup

Swine flu vaccine arriving, but don't line up yet

By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer

(10-05) 07:28 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

And we're off: Swine flu vaccinations begin Monday with squirts in the noses scheduled for some doctors, nurses and other health workers in Indiana and Tennessee, a first step in a hugely ambitious campaign to try to inoculate over half the population in a few months. But don't start bugging your doctor about an appointment just yet.
This week's initial shipments to states are so small that, with a few exceptions for children, most states are reserving them for health workers so they'll stay healthy enough to care for the flu-stricken and vaccinate others.
Inoculations won't gear up in earnest until mid-October, when at least 40 million doses against what scientists call the 2009 H1N1 flu will have rolled out, with more arriving each week after that.

What did the hoodie ever do to deserve this?
It used to be just a sweat shirt, a comfortable piece of clothing to throw on over a T-shirt and broken-in jeans.
Now it's controversial couture.
While not banned outright at Arden Fair mall, beginning Nov. 1 officials there will restrict patrons from wearing the hoods up and covering their faces, because of a fear of criminal activity

The fine is $421, same as for drivers who run straight through a red light.

Swine flu draws a shrug, Field Poll finds

Erin Allday, Chronicle Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Half of Californians are not particularly worried about the swine flu, and most people trust that the state has the resources to keep them healthy if an influenza outbreak occurs, according to a recent Field Poll survey released Monday.
Despite repeated messages from federal and state officials that the swine flu - a form of influenza Type A, subtype H1N1 - could be a serious public health threat, 49 percent of survey respondents said they were not very concerned about the virus or not concerned at all.

CNN) -- One person was in custody Monday following a report of an armed intruder on the University of South Florida campus in Tampa, Florida, police said. Police took a man into custody at the University of South Florida after receiving reports of a person with a bomb.
USF police have asked the Tampa police's bomb team to respond to the campus regarding the belongings of the person in custody, said USF police Lt. Meg Ross. No one was hurt and no shots were fired, she said.
"We have someone we think may have been involved, but we have to investigate fully," Ross told CNN.
"We have not looked in his backpack," she said. "We have the bomb squad on their way to look at that."

Positive thinking sustains 69-year-old marriage

Louise Rafkin, Special to The Chronicle
Sunday, October 4, 2009

"Feb. 5, 1938," says Woody Woodman, 89, remembering the moment he met his wife of 69 years, Audrey, also 89. "A cute little gal in a green plaid skirt and white flats," he shorthands, "and a good dancer.

"If I'd known that plaid skirt made such an impression, I would have saved it and made pillows from it," quips Audrey, smiling. They were at a UC Berkeley "mixer" when Woody was a freshman. Audrey, whose mother owned a boarding house near Cal, was still in high school. Though Audrey was dancing with many young men, Woody insisted on cutting in multiple times. But when Woody asked to drive her home in his Model-A Roadster, Audrey declined. Still, he managed to finagle her phone number and soon they were enjoying drives, walks to the movies, and picnics. At one of the picnics, a tall, good-looking guy came along; he was the young Gregory Peck. (His given name was Eldred, and he then went by "Elsey.")Read more:
