There's a last minute push to bring the Winter Olympics to Lake Tahoe in 2018. But the Wall Street Journal reports, the US Olympic Committee doesn't plan to put a bid together because there isn't enough time before the October 15th deadline.
Despite the long odds, a spokesman for the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition still hopes to persuade the commission to change its mind.

Father of Palin's grandson to pose for Playgirl

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Levi Johnston is going for the ultimate exposure — the 19-year-old father of Sarah Palin's grandchild will pose nude for Playgirl, his attorney said Wednesday.
To get ready for his close-up, Johnston is training three hours a day, six nights a week at an Anchorage gym with a local body builder.

The first doses of vaccine against swine flu — officially known as H1N1 of 2009 — will start arriving at hospitals, doctors' offices and clinics around the country this week. That's record time for a new vaccine — only a little more than five months after scientists discovered the now-pandemic virus.
The swine flu vaccination campaign is moving from planning to implementation, as Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it.

'Whatever' so totally tops most annoying word poll

So, you know, it is what it is, but Americans are totally annoyed by the use of "whatever" in conversations.
The popular slacker term of indifference was found "most annoying in conversation" by 47 percent of Americans surveyed in a Marist College poll released Wednesday.

Inmates Hurt In Folsom Prison Fight

FOLSOM, Calif. -- Some inmates were injured Wednesday during a fight at Folsom State Prison, a corrections official said.
About 120 prisoners were involved in a disturbance at about 7:30 a.m. in the dining hall.
Fewer than 10 inmates were treated for injuries, but no staff members were hurt.

New Budget Cuts May Force Schools to Drop Sports

Another major round of budget cuts could devastate programs at Elk Grove schools, including all of the sports programs, as well as increasing class sizes and laying off hundreds of employees.
Elk Grove schools will have to slash another $40 million next year because of the state budget crisis. School officials are scrambling to come up with ways to save programs and staff positions, and are asking for ideas from parents.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Marijuana advocates are gathering signatures to get as many as three pot-legalization measures on the ballot in 2010 in California, setting up what could be a groundbreaking clash with the federal government over U.S. drug policy.
At least one poll shows voters would support lifting the pot prohibition, which would make the state of more than 38 million the first in the nation to legalize marijuana.

1 Shot in Leg at Florin Train Station

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A victim was shot in the leg Wednesday at the Florin Road Regional Transit light rail station and taken to a hospital, Sacramento police said.
Sgt. Norm Leong said after the shooting, the victim got on the train at the Florin Road stop, rode to the Meadowview stop, and called police.

Sacramento Homeless Advocates Plead For Public Help To Fund Winter Shelter

SACRAMENTO, CA- Winter's cold and wet weather is only a few weeks away. However, any kind of overflow shelter for the homeless in Sacramento is not ready to open because there simply is not enough money.
Homeless advocates are now making a plea to the public to help.
The county provided 100 percent of the funding for the overflow shelter at Cal Expo over the past several years. It can no longer afford to pay the $640,000 to run the shelter from November to April.

From Inside Military, A Rebuke Of Ban On Gays

Gay rights activists this week hailed as groundbreaking the Pentagon's decision to publish an essay calling for the repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.
The analysis of the 15-year-old policy, which bars openly gay Americans from serving in the military, was notable not only for its systematic repudiation of arguments that gay service members harm military unit cohesion, but also for its unusual source and placement.
