Authorities have identified the suspect in this afternoon's fatal beating on the California State University, Sacramento, campus as Quran Jones, a 19-year-old student who lived at the dormitory where the violence occurred.

Court upholds stricter drunk-driving policy

California law lets the state immediately suspend the license of a trucker who drives with a blood-alcohol content of .04 percent or more, but requires a .08 level for a hearing officer to uphold the suspension. A state appeals court says the discrepancy was caused by a legislative error and the stricter limit should apply.

Calif. Has Nation's Fourth-Highest Jobless Rate

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― California has the nation's fourth-highest jobless rate at 12.2 percent. The Labor Department says today that Michigan has the nation's highest unemployment rate at 15.3 percent, followed by second-place Nevada at 13.3 percent and third-place Rhode Island at 13 percent.

Treasury to order bailed-out firms to slash pay

WASHINGTON – The Treasury Department is expected in the next few days to order companies that received huge government bailouts last year to slash the base salaries of their top executives by an average of 90 percent and cut their total compensation in half, according to a person familiar with the matter.
